Royal Academy Summer Exhibiton 2010

Posted on April 2nd, 2010 by Kellie, in News

This is my third submission to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition The first year I entered with a wall mounted ceramics piece in the sculpture section and was successful at being selected to the second phase.  The second year I entered a piece of my mixed media work and submitted it into the unglazed section.  Delivering my works to the centre of London was incredibly stressful; nearly getting me a parking ticket and seeing me knock a motor cyclist of his bike ( a long story and obviously not my fault).

So for 2010 I decided to approach this now religious calendar event differently.  Firstly, I vowed never to get so stressed driving around Piccadilly and secondly, I would observe the RA’s theme which this year is “Raw”.  All this is done with the hope that this year will be my debut at the RA, I can see the big lights calling!

I was excited about the theme this year, especially as 2010 has been so slow to start for me and I was in need of a kick start. My New Year’s determination is ‘effortless achieving’ so this too complemented the theme. I feel the theme really suits my work and allowed me to explore the subject matter behind my work and respond to the materials more quickly and spontaneously.  I decided to approach my works by revealing the many varying processes in the final piece.

The idea is that I present two pieces as one piece, one showing the beginning and mid stages and the second an almost completed piece.  As you can see from the image above entitled “Half Baked”.

I also submitted another piece called “is it there yet?”, which is an almost completed piece, using clay fabric houses that look redundant and in need of renovating. I’m keeping everything crossed  that you might see either piece or both in June. I will keep you posted.

The Royal Summer Exhibition is on from 14th June until 22nd August 2010.
